Enjoy the best of Lapland in winter with this two-full-day holiday package that combines Arctic animals experiences, local activities and Northern Lights hunting!
DAY 1
10:00 TRIP TO RANUA WILDLIFE PARK (6 hours)
With your guide, visit the Ranua Wildlife Park to see most of the Arctic animals, at the park you can follow the 2,5-kilometres wooden boardwalks through the forest where you get to see all the Arctic animals in one place. This is a rare opportunity to meet the local animals that reside in Lapland and other parts of the Arctic. The animals you can spot in the Wildlife Park include polar bears, predatory birds, owls, wild boars, musk oxen, otters, Arctic foxes, wolves, wild reindeer, wolverines, moose… A buffet lunch at the restaurant is included.
EVENING: NORTHERN LIGHTS WILDERNESS TOUR WITH CAMERA (4 hours)
Get ready to experience the beauty of the Aurora Borealis! The weather forecasts and the solar activity reports are always checked during the day in order to get the best chance to observe the Northern Lights. You will be informed in due time about your pick-up time via email.
This excursion will also offer you the unique opportunity to drive long distances through the Lappish wilderness, explore the Arctic nature and take on different routes that will lead you to fantastic scenery – snowy forests, powerful rapids, quaint frozen beaches and vast ice covered lakes. Hopefully, with the Northern Lights dancing over your heads!
Refreshments and a typical Finnish campfire snack will be provided halfway, as your guide lights a fire to keep you warm. This is a great opportunity for your guide to show you how to build a fire using traditional methods. No need for matches or a lighter, your guide will use flint & steel and natural materials you can find in the nature that surrounds you (this can be done in conditions as cold as -30°C!). Once the fire is burning and the kettle is boiling, your guide will keep an eye on the moving sky. This break around the campfire will be also the perfect moment for your guide to answer all your questions about Lapland, life in the Arctic and the Northern Lights. Hot drinks are served, sausages are grilled over the campfire and bread toasted for you.
DAY 2
08:50 AUTHENTIC REINDEER FARM VISIT (2 hours and 15 minutes)
Today, you will meet the most iconic animal of Lapland! Your guide will drive you to one of the most traditional reindeer farms in Lapland, located on the lovely shores of a peaceful lake. While taking in the surroundings, you will learn about the reindeer from the herders. They will show you around the traditional farm and because it is the first visit of the day, you will be given a chance to feed the reindeer their favourite food, lichen. During this visit, you will also have the opportunity to test your driving skills with a short loop sleigh ride of 500 metres, before having some time around the fire in the company of a herder who will answer all your questions and share their passion with you.
This visit gives you a great insight into the reindeer and reindeer husbandry. After the visit, your guide will drive you back to Rovaniemi, where you will have time to have lunch on your own, before your afternoon activity.
14:00 CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITY FROM 3 OPTIONS (3 hours):
A. ICE FISHING – Ice Fishing is a great way to experience the silence of the wilderness and experience a cultural activity that many locals practice in winter, to catch food for themselves. As soon as a fish is caught (of a decent size) we will prepare it and cook it straight over the fire, if the fish are undersized we will always return them to the lake.
B. WILDERNESS SURVIVAL TOUR – Wilderness Survival Tour is a very special opportunity for those who wish to wander into the forest to try and get a glimpse of the spectacular and elusive Finnish wildlife and natural beauty of Lapland. This tour is also intended to be very educational – your guide will share with you their knowledge and passion about nature, and teach you about the secrets of Finnish nature as well as some basic survival skills.
C. SNOWSHOEING TRIP – Put on your snowshoes and get ready for a relaxing but active experience in the wilderness! With your professional guide, you will snowshoe through old forests and along frozen rivers, looking for wildlife and steps left in the snow.
EVENING: NORTHERN LIGHTS WILDERNESS TOUR WITH CAMERA (4 hours)
Catch your second chance to capture the beautiful Northern Lights! If the conditions allow it, your guide will take you to a different route so that you can enjoy a different experience and get to see more of the winter scenery of Lapland. Your Aurora guide will have their professional camera with them, and you will receive all the pictures by email the next day.
