When Can You See the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi?
The best time for understanding the magic of the Northern Lights is during the dark months, from late August to April. This long season offers a variety of ways to witness the Aurora:

Nature is unpredictable. While no one can offer a 100% guarantee, our expertise in understanding the magic of the Northern Lights means we use advanced tracking and local knowledge to maximize your chances every single night.
We don’t just stay in one place. If it’s cloudy in the city, we use weather satellite data to hunt for clear skies across the region, often driving long distances to find the perfect viewing spot. If the conditions require so, we may drive up to 150 kilometres during the night to find a clear sky.
Not with the right gear! We provide professional-grade thermal outfits. Plus, we always have a warm campfire going to keep the chill away while we wait for the Aurora to appear.
While a DSLR is great, modern phones can capture the lights surprisingly well. Our guides are happy to help you with your settings, and we also take photos for you!
Every morning we analyse the weather forecast and the aurora predictions. Based on this, we adapt the routes of our Northern Lights tours and their departures.
Your exact pick-up/meeting time will be communicated by e-mail on the morning of your tour. It is very important that you check your e-mail the same day (please check also your SPAM folder) to make sure to have the information. The departures are usually set between 18:00 and 22:00, depending on the darkness period.
Standard start times of our Northern Lights Wilderness Tour (may be adapted due to weather conditions):
- November to February – 19:00
- September, October and March – 20:00
- April – 21:30
Yes. You may request to change the date of your Northern Lights Wilderness Tour for any other night (depending on availability) free of charge. However, the request must be made enough time in advance (before 15:00 local time), so we can inform our Aurora guides. Late requests will not be accepted. Please note that during the high season (especially around Christmas) changes are not possible.
