September in Rovaniemi is the true transition from summer to autumn, as the trees change from vibrant green to glimmering shades of orange, red and yellow. This is the period known in Finnish as Ruska, and it’s the best time for stunning photography and nature (and the best time to take one of our hiking or canoe tours!). The weather in September changes completely from August, as the average temperature is between 5-15 degrees and the daylight hours slowly become shorter.

Foraging for mushrooms and berries is a very popular activity in Rovaniemi, you can find blueberries and lingonberries in the local forests. But there’s something else that’s super popular in September, but what was it? Hmm, I have to think a bit more… oh wait, that’s it! The Northern Lights! The nights are becoming longer, darkness is returning, but the skies soon light up again in beautiful shades of green from the incredible Aurora Borealis, known as revontulet in Finnish! And lucky for you, our Northern Lights tours begin again from 1st September.

So, there is red, orange, yellow and green all over Rovaniemi, but to complete the rainbow, keep an eye out for local students! University students can often be seen wearing their overalls, traditionally a different colour depending on their area of studies. Since August and September is the beginning of studies for most, there is an abundance of student parties and you’ll be sure to see the colorful overalls. P.S.
