Do you want to experience Lapland’s nature? There is no better way than doing it on backcountry skis! On our Ski Trekking safari, we take you on an adventure through the wintery Taiga forest.
After picking up our guests, they had the chance to decide where to go: to a (partly frozen) river or up a hill to our teepee. They chose the hilltop, which is the more difficult route for ski trekking but also the one with amazing views. After a short drive, we soon arrived at the starting point. Some short explanations and off we went, straight into the Taiga forest.
The backcountry skis that we use for ski trekking have a skin underneath. This allows us to go uphill as well because it causes fraction. But as our guests haven’t done ski trekking before, they had some difficulties skiing uphill. Practice makes perfect! So, after a while they knew how to do it and we quickly reached the top of the hill where our teepee is.
From here you already have an amazing view over a valley with a frozen lake and the surrounding hills. But Theo took our guests even higher on a small ski trekking loop while I stayed back to prepare the fire. When it’s as cold as that day it can take a while to light it! By now, I had enough time to practice so it was no problem, even in the cold.
After the others got back, we enjoyed some hot drinks and a nice barbeque snack around the fire, warming up and having a little chat with our guests. Some time later, we decided it was time to go back.
You might think that going downhill is the easy part of this ski trekking tour. But actually, it was the hardest for me and our guests. No surprise that some of us landed in the snow a couple of times. You just have to take it with a smile, it can happen to anyone! And it is part of the fun when you do ski trekking, especially the first time.
