This Northern Lights season is expected to be one of the best in the last years as we are moving towards the peak of the current 11-year solar cycle. Expectations are high, excitement level is high too – but how’s the reality so far?
The last week of August and the very first days of September were tricky in the Rovaniemi area as we had a lot of clouds here. Northern Lights hunting was more challenging for our team, but we had successful Aurora tours. Despite the initial successes, we were still waiting for something special. We are always excited about the Northern Lights, and after a very intense summer, we are ready to enjoy all the night adventures. So, as I mentioned before, expectations were high also from our Aurora hunters.
On Tuesday, 12th of September, we noticed some very exciting and promising solar data, but as it sometimes happens – weather conditions were against us. Clouds were covering the area in a radius around 300 kilometres from Rovaniemi. But the very next day, Mother Nature decided to change her mind, took our side and provided us with clear skies just around 50 kilometres from Rovaniemi. That was the place where our Aurora hunting team headed and drove our guests from Panama and the Philippines.
What we love about our job is that many people are coming to Finnish Lapland from the other side of the world to chase their dream of seeing the magical Aurora Borealis. Meeting interesting people with different life stories, backgrounds, experiences, hopes, and wishes makes our job even more interesting. Thanks to our focus on small groups with a maximum of 8 travellers, we have a perfect opportunity to get to know a little bit our guests, share our knowledge, but also make their experience more personal. It’s a pleasure for us when they choose Wild About Lapland to make their dream come true!

But back to the Northern Lights! We had perfect conditions, clear skies, promising solar activity… and then it happened! The first minutes of gentle Auroras over the horizon rapidly changed to beautiful eruptions of green and purple. We chose a great location on the hilltop, so just a few minutes later, we were lucky to enjoy the Northern Lights all around us!
Imagine that situation. A little bit cold evening. You are standing literally in the middle of nowhere, just silence and darkness. Millions of stars in the sky over the Arctic wilderness. Turn 360 degrees, and the Northern Lights are everywhere! Somewhere as a gentle green fog, somewhere as a line over the horizon, and somewhere dancing and pulsating over our heads. And this situation lasted for several hours! What a crazy experience! Here is a short gallery with some of the best moments from this Northern Lights Wilderness Tour.
Even our experienced guides were excited and admitted that this was probably one of the best nights. They were super happy also for our guests as they came a long way to Rovaniemi to see this beautiful natural phenomenon, and they were lucky to enjoy a remarkable show in the sky over Lapland. This is fair to acknowledge – you have to be lucky with solar activity and weather conditions during your stay in Arctic areas.
Our Aurora hunting team always try to do their best, but unfortunately, we can’t control the weather and the Sun. But we use our experience, weather data, solar data and instincts to maximise the chances of our guests to experience the magic of the Aurora Borealis. As a famous microbiologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur said: “Chance favors the prepared mind.” And we are always prepared!
So take your best chance to see the Northern Lights from Rovaniemi in small groups and choose one of the Northern Lights tours with Wild About Lapland. Let the adventure begin! See you in Rovaniemi!
