THE NORTHERN LIGHTS TOURS: 7 OCTOBER 2020

We publish on our Rovaniemi blog the reports of our Northern Lights Wilderness Tours. Check out what happened over the last few nights and get a taste of what you will experience on our famous Aurora Borealis trips!

7 October 2020: Miss Aurora was too shy but we still had a great experience in the wilderness!

Those days, the weather forecasts were very pessimistic: clouds, rain, wind… However our two guests really wanted to see them so we recommended to move their booking to a better night. Every three hours, we analysed the charts and the weather previsions in Lapland, to find out the best direction with a clearer sky. The wind was gently blowing from south-east, offering a little window in the eastern direction.

As we arrived to our first location, just outside Rovaniemi, a quick observation of the sky confirmed our first analysis: it’s better to drive eastward! We then went 50km farther to one of our most favourite spots.

The sky was scattered, offering clear patches in the south and east direction. We could easily see some stars, so we spent some time to talk about the constellations we could spot, and the mythology behing them.

Practicing our fire-making skills!

However, the northern horizon was still thickily covered and we could not see anything but a wall of clouds facing us. We then decided to wait for the wind to blow it away, hoping that it will open a small window so we could see what was happening behind the scene. We took this opportutinity to practice our fire-making skills, and grill some Finnish snack over the barbecue.

We also spent a long time sharing tales and stories about the auroras with our guests, we explained how communities around the world interpret the green arches, and revealed the scientific explanation behind this fabulous phenomenon.

Suddenly, something happened in the sky. What we were hoping for actually happened: the wind slashed the cloud cover and opened a window to the north. From then, it was only a question of luck: will the sky offer us northern lights tonight? On the camera, we could see a very (very!) pale turquoise light: is it the reflection of the half moon in the empty? Or is it a shy aurora that is about to come? We waited to know more…

Sadly, the sky was not willing to reveal its secrets tonight. Soon, more clouds came and closed the door. The show was over before it even started.

Enjoying a BBQ in the wilderness!

We certainly made the right decisions, drove to the right directions, but unfortunately we run out of luck tonight. This is also part of the magic of the Northern Lights:  one cannot control Mother Nature’s desires. But in the end, we still enjoyed a joyful night in the wilderness!
