August in Rovaniemi is a very special time, as the last of summer is enjoyed by locals and tourists. The last few days of 24 hour daylight mean late night swims in the Kemijoki river and the arrival of August is clearly marked by the arrival (and returns!) of local and international students. This is one of the most colourful months, as the bright green foliage, mixed with the red berries from the Rowan tree and the variety of student overalls seen across the city. Many locals take their holiday in June and July, so slowly life returns to the city, whilst the long daylight hours give you energy for the entire week.

You know the signs of Autumn are coming when you see the buses transporting hundreds of people to Simerock – a popular 2-day music festival located in the Ounaspaviljonki area. Last year the festival featured the popular singer Käärijä, whilst this year featured Windows95man, both well known from their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023 and 2024.

And well, what better way to recover from an intense two days of partying than enjoying one of our relaxing canoe trips in the beautiful Finnish nature? Or perhaps a visit to the reindeer farm where you can feed the reindeer and enjoy some local cookies and hot drinks? Sounds like the greatest cure! But, the fun doesn’t stop there!

Explore Rovaniemi from a locals perspective and support the local football team RoPS by attending a game or two, or visit Ounasvaara for some berry picking and relaxing time in nature. Take a visit to the Arktikum museum or explore Korundi – they sometimes have special events like a tribute ABBA band happening this October. I know, ABBA in Rovaniemi? Incredible! Finally, towards the end of August there will be an international market held across Rovaniemi city centre where you can enjoy foods and handicrafts from Greece, Italy, the UK and more!
